The Hedge
Week 8, Term 1 | Thursday 21 March 2024 A weekly snippet of what’s happening ‘behind the hedge’ at Mercedes College...

Pétanque Champs

After a rigorous competition amongst our Year 3 to Year 5 students, it was Year 4 students Harrison and Eithan who took out the College Championship for 2024! Tonight, they will pair up with runners up Oliver (for the third time!) and Eddie (Year 5), to represent Mercedes College in the SA French Teachers Association’s Schools Pétanque Competition.

A second team, made up of Lyla and Eliza (Year 4) and Tommy and Sebastian (Year 3), will also compete. Allez Mercedes College!

Year 12 Learning Reviews

A reminder for Year 12 families that Term 1 Learning Reviews will be available for Monday 8 April and Wednesday 10 April 2024, between 4pm and 6:30pm.

This is an opportunity to meet with your child’s teacher at the College. Bookings will be facilitated through the EdVal platform that was used in 2023 to manage subject selection processes; the Parent Teacher Online platform will not be used.

Please save these dates and more details about how to make your bookings will be circulated soon.

Dance, Dance, Dance

This week, our Stage 1 Dance students took the opportunity to attend off-Campus workshops alongside working professionals and students from across the State.

Designed to broaden their understanding and development of dance composition, contemporary dance technique and Jazz, this was a great opportunity for our dance students to spend time with other performers and to learn from professionals in each genre of dance.

Learning the Golden Rule

Last week, our Year 11 students participated in a mini-seminar day with guests from the Abrahamic Institute of Peace, who spoke about their connections to Islam and Judaism.

An interfaith discussion, students continued their exploration of “the Golden Rule” that connects different religions, including Christianity, Hinduism, Islam, Judaism, and even Indigenous spirituality.

2024 Best Teachers Campaign

News Corp Australia’s Best Teachers campaign is a chance for Australians to celebrate a special teacher that has had a big impact. It was launched in 2023 to help recognise the contributions of educators around the country.

If you’ve had an amazing connection with a Mercedes College teacher, you can nominate them now.

Not Blue about Blue

Our Stage 2 Drama students recently attended Blue, which is part of the Adelaide Festival. The production is a tender monologue that explores struggles of love and loss and the joy and pain of growing up. Students had the opportunity to analyse and reflect on this thought-provoking drama piece as part of their overall evaluation. What a great experience for our students to attend such world class Adelaide Festival shows.

Living and Learning in Harmony

This week is Harmony Week, a celebration that recognises Australia’s diversity. We celebrated this important occasion today by encouraging students and staff to add a pop of orange to their outfit while on Campus, acknowledging our commitment to inclusiveness, respect, and a sense of belonging for everyone.

Year 7 Adventures

This week, our Year 7s are spending some time in the great outdoors, testing their sense of adventure by taking on the challenges of Woodhouse Adventure Park.

Students prepared for camp, riding mountain bikes around the Campus and also erecting tents in the Sunken Garden. This camp helps students to work on their self-confidence and build resilience. All of the activities involve teamwork and risk-taking, combined with supporting and encouraging each other. A great experience for our Year 7s and also some great life lessons.

Classes 7JA, 7CB and 7BG returned from camp yesterday, and 7LH and 7AU will be back on Campus tomorrow.

Assembling for FUN

Across all of our Year Levels, classes take turns hosting regular assemblies, where awards are presented and key events discussed, but most of all, it’s a place of creativity and fun!

During the Middle School Assembly hosted by 9LJ, staff competed against students in different games (the students won!), musicians performed, and comedy routines kept everyone entertained. Our assemblies add a different layer to students’ learning and provide opportunities for classes to bring their own thoughts and ideas to life in front of their peers.

9LJ certainly set the bar high…

Track Cycling Record

A big congratulations to Hunter (Year 10) for his recent achievements representing South Australia at the Junior Track Cycling National Championships in Brisbane.

The youngest rider in the U17 category, Hunter maintained his individual National record, and was part of the Bronze Medallist Sprint Team, recording the fastest time of the day, as he celebrated turning 15!

What a wonderful achievement and a pretty great birthday present!

Science at Work

Our Year 5 students took a trip across Campus recently to visit our Middle and Senior School Science labs, where they conducted an experiment in relation to their unit of inquiry on ‘How the World Works’.

Using different types of liquids against a control, students explored the oxidation of apple slices, capturing the results of what substances slowed the browning of the fruit and to what degree. A great experience for them ahead of future science experiments in Middle School!
