State Cross Country Championship Record

Mercedes College was represented by 31 athletes at this year's State Secondary Schools’ Cross Country Championships at Oakbank Race Course on Thursday 1 June.

For an 11th time in the event's history, the Open Boys took out the title. This is far and ahead of any other school's best performance, with St Peter's (6) and Scotch College (5) our neartest rivals, which illuminates the strong culture that the College has built over many years.

Our second best performed team was the Under 13 Girls team who won silver medals, despite losing one of our top three runners (Jess Hopwood) with a broken arm from the football competition the day before.

The other medalling teams were the Under 16 Boys and the Open Girls who both won bronze medals.

Our other two teams, the Under 14 Girls who placed 6th and the Under 14 Boys who placed 10th, both achieved highly commendable performances with a number of inexperienced runners who will improve greatly over the next few years.

Individually we had seven students finish in the top 20 of their age group. This gives four students a very real chance to gain state selection, along with our invitation to represent South Australia with an Under 18 Boys team as a result of winning the Open Boys team category.

This Secondary school representation happens every second year and Mercedes has been continuously involved on the last six occasions. Our teams have previously won four medals in this category against mega Eastern states single sex, and in most cases scholarship, schools. That is a real compliment to the Cross Country students at Mercedes.
